Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink ......

Our growing population places all our resources and infrastructure under extra pressure and our water resources are struggling under the pressure of growth and high past consumption rates. We live in the driest inhabited continent in the world, rainfall is inconsistent, droughts have become common and in addition we are now dealing with the already emerging impacts of climate change. Wise use and sustainable management of Australia's water resources is imperative as without it there will not be adequate water for human use or for the environment.
What can we do to ensure our children, their children and their children's children have enough water? The Australian Government's framework: Water for the Future provides national leadership in water reforms. The four key priorities of the framework are:
- Taking action on climate change
- Using water wisely
- Securing water supplies
- Supporting healthy rivers
The National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative is a key element of the Water for the Future framework. The Australian Government has allocated $250 million for this initiative and monetary incentives have been put in place for the installation of water tanks and greywater systems. It is also widely acknowledged that we must reduce our reliance on rain-fed water sources and as a result, desalination projects have emerged. What can your community do to help?
- Actively promote all water saving initiatives
- If you haven't already done so, consider the installation of rainwater tanks, greywater systems or desalination plants
- Utilise drought resistant plants and landscaping supplies
As communities we must continually adjust to a future with less water.
